ALBANEO - System of active faults at the edge of an incipient plate in the Alboran Sea

Earthquakes are the most devastating natural hazard, but predicting them remains difficult. The ALBANEO project studies the Al Idrissi fault system in the Alboran Sea to better understand seismic and tsunami hazards. Using geological, geophysical, geochemical and geothermal data, the project addresses key questions about elastic energy accumulation, energy release, fluid dynamics and strain distribution. The results obtained assess the risks to coastal communities and infrastructure.
